Art Detour weekend on Roosevelt Row to include a poetry Anti-Slam.
Organic Poetry open mic is a magical years-running event hosted at The Firehouse Gallery. The show combines improvisational musical accompaniment with the spoken and sung word to bring artists together for monthly on-stage collaboration.
The Downtown Poetry Slam is an open poetry competition event seeking a group of poets to represent Phoenix at the National Poetry Slam in Oakland California this August.
On March 8th at Firehouse these two events will combine ranks and host the Anti-Slam!
Anti-Slam?
Anti-Slam!
The rules of slam poetry are as follows:
1) Poems must be original
2) Poems cannot exceed a three minute time limit
3) No musical accompaniment or props
4) No nudity
Anti-slam encourages performers to break these rules. Poets will be judged on breaking at least one rule of traditional slam.
Sign up for 12 poets opens at 3:00 pm.
Beth May
Beth May is a screenwriter by trade, a poet to anyone who gets her clothes off, and a freelance artist to her parents, who give her every help wanted sign they see. She is nifty #97 on the New Times’ list of 100 Creatives, and her most recent play “Earthlings” is up for film adaptation. Her poetry album “The Family Arsonist” just dropped like hot sauce but her first album “Dueling Compass” is also available over at Lawn Gnome Bookstore and on Bandcamp. She is easily stressed like a small mouse or an Amy Adams character but is a more violent fellatio fan. Her writing combines honesty, humor and self-revelation in a way that makes her an essential voice within the slam community. She also took first place in February's Downtown Slam, which is really the highest honor any poet could hope to achieve.
Jared Paul
Jared Paul has toured internationally in over 200 cities throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe and played alongside poets, musicians, journalists, and speakers such as Amy Goodman, Saul Williams, Bill Clinton, Sage Francis, Our Lady Peace, Paul Hawken, Jello Biafra, Immortal Technique, Anti-Flag, Atmosphere, The Misfits and many others. His work has been featured on the Canadian Broadcast Company program, “Zed TV,” as well as in CMJ Magazine and The Providence Journal. Jared is a two time Individual World Poetry Slam Finalist and has been a featured poet at the Greenbuild International Conference & Expo, the Post Secret national book tour, South By Southwest Music Festival, and Net Roots Nation. He was also the headlining act for the 2009 Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach grand opening at the nationally acclaimed Villa Stuck gallery in Munich, Germany.Find the Facebook event here
